The little filigree 3d printed skull that became the #1 most funded Sculpture project in Kickstarter history & an icon of the 3D printed medium. The piece marks the 1st application of Joshua’s surrealist automatism technique to representational form. It gives a new identity to the shape & invites the viewer to discover the form through the gentle visual lead of the pattern. This has been an exploration in how 2D images & designs can change the interpretation of 3D form & geometry. Representing the passing of an era & the ever growing renewal over the ghost of the past.
Fabricated using a complex five-step process. First, the model is printed in a wax using a specialized, high-resolution 3D printer. It is then put in a container where liquid plaster is poured in around it. Once the plaster sets, the wax is melted out in a furnace, and the remaining plaster becomes the mold. Molten brass is poured into this mold and allowed to harden. The plaster is broken away, and the brass piece is cleaned and polished. Finally, this piece is electroplated with a thin layer of nickel for durability and an outer layer of high quality 18K gold. The result is a smooth gloss finish comparable to a solid gold item.
